“Outsource or inhouse?” is the question management ask re payroll. Of course we are going to say “outsource” but for some very good reasons:
- We have to be absolutely up to date with leglislation
- We provide continuity when there is illness, holiday or changes in personnel
- We can free up the time of your finance person so that they can get on with other things
- We reduce the risk of salary information being leaked
- We have excellent payroll software so you don’t have to pay for the licence
People think payroll is simple but it’s an area fraught with legal landmines. From wrong holiday pay to incorrect pensions to miscalculation of statutory maternity pay and sick pay, we know the pitfalls.
Charities
Payroll for charities can be slightly different. We often produce more forecasts and cost analysis reports as charities are very cashflow conscious and budgets may vary. Also due to ethical considerations, charities often take on staff that would not otherwise be employed in the corporate world. We may have to adjust payroll for universal credit or for an attachment of earnings.
For our charity clients we waiver set up fees for both pensions and payroll.
Directors
There are several reasons why a director/directors of a ltd company should set up a payroll and be paid via PAYE:
- It is tax efficient and makes use of the income tax allowance
- Earning above the national insurance lower earnings level means that you can qualify for a state pension
- A payroll can provide a fixed, stable and frequent income
- Payslips can help for mortgage applications
- SMP may be available
- It can be easier to manage expenses
- A payroll can allow easy contributions to a pension
Sole traders
Sole traders often want to take on an apprentice, a relative or may want to have temporary cover and so may take on someone part-time or on a zero hours contract. Sole traders do not have to be a ltd company to set up a payroll and have employees. We can register you as an employer with HMRC and submit a PAYE registration form and set up your payroll.
Accountants and Bookkeepers
We are independent which enables us to work with accountancy firms, external consultants and bookkeepers. We work with a number of accountants and bookkeepers providing reports, P60s and information about of tax code changes.

About Us
SEA Payroll Solutions was founded in 2020 by Liz Jones and Simon Jones.
Liz is CEO of SEA Payroll and has over a decade of payroll experience with prestigious accountancy firms. Prior to founding SEA Payroll, she ran the payroll bureau for accountancy practice Turner & Partners, building it from 60 to 120 clients. Before moving into payroll, Liz worked in financial public relations in the City of London and has a BA in English from the University of Kent.
Simon is the Finance Director of SEA Payroll. He is a Charterted Accountant with over 30 years finance and accounting experience. He has acted as Finance Director of several businesses where he has gained extensive experience of running a payroll in-house. After qualifying as a chartered accountant with Andersens in London, Simon worked in corporate finance for several years. He has an MA in mathematics from the University of Cambridge.
Rates
We charge a monthly, flat rate fee based on how much time we think your payroll is going to take. We are honest and transparent. We do not believe in charging extra for pensions, payslips, reports, admin changes and for when you pick up the phone to us for advice.
We talk to you, understand your requirements and calculate a rate which we think is fair to both us and you. No hidden extras or nasty surprises.
Why are our rates low? Our costs are low and we beneift from economies of scale. Our software costs the same whether for 1 to 100 companies. It takes as much effort to create 1 payslip as 400. Our knowledge of HMRC compliance has to be up to date whether we work for 1 or several clients. But most importantly, our rates are low as we want our clients to grow.
Paying staff is expensive, paying for paying them shouldn’t be.
